It’s no secret that running hasn’t been at the top of my to-do list for quite some time now. The last race I ran was last May (the Wisconsin Marathon on the 5th and the Team Salute 5k over Memorial Day Weekend) and since then, it just hasn’t been in my heart to lace up again. It may be heartbreak from the rough marathon, fear or just plain old needing a break but once I moved to VA, I started feeling like I might want to start again. So I did just that and took advantage of the World Refugee Day Virtual 5k presented by Soul Focus.
World Refugee Day was June 20th and was a run like no other. It gathered over 1,000 runners in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda to race for hope, for fun and for each other. Refugees were able to unite, bringing their all to the starting line where they found unexpected strength, resiliency and possibility along the way.
Soul Focus then brought this movement to the rest of the world, introducing the first World Refugee Day Virtual 5k. This run benefitted refugees through the American Refugee Committee, which is an amazing cause. I was unaware of either event until BibRave brought it to my attention and I’m so happy I had the opportunity to be a part of it, plus make my debut back into the racing scene.
My favorite part was that I got to run it whenever, wherever and with whomever I wanted. Somehow I conned Michael into joining me and he ran his first 5k in over 5 years 🙌 Hoping I can keep the streak going for both of us!
