Dancing Through the Last Week of Half Marathon Training

7 days out from the Chicago Spring Half Marathon and I cannot wait! I have put in the time and miles (with a few exceptions) and from this point on, it’s smooth sailing (or at least one can hope).

One of the big things I do leading up to race day is creating a new playlist. When I’m running, I love a good pump-up song meaning it is fast-pace and almost makes you want to dance. So we’re talking Chainsmokers, Duke Dumont, and my forever favorite for the last 5 minutes of the race, ‘Levels’ by Avicii. I don’t know why but I love hearing this song for the last 1/2 – 1 mile; it always puts a pep in my step when I need it most. Although, I do always throw a few feel-good songs on there such as ‘Love Myself’.

I usually aim to have my playlists be a little bit longer than what I anticipate my time to be so I can mentally gauge where I am in the race compared to how many songs I’ve listened to (I don’t know about you but I love playing number games in my head when I run. Whether it be dividing out my splits or how many songs to a mile, it keeps my mind off the running and potential pain and helps pass some time). For this race, my playlist is an hour and 58 minutes – about 14 minutes more than what I hope to run at. Feel free to check it out and follow me on Spotify! I usually make a new playlist every race unless they are close together.
